Patchwork Quilt CM Complete

Yesterday I loaded a friend's patchwork quilt onto the frame.  I longarm quilted it with a design called Dewdrops in the Garden by Urban Elementz.

I had a lot of time to quilt on Saturday because my husband worked a lot of overtime out of town this week.  He made it home late on Friday night.  I wanted to let him sleep in the house.  Owen keeps a close eye on him when he sleeps like this because he missed him so much = more quilting time for me in the longarm room.

This quilting design has a beautiful mix of swirls, circles and leaves.  One of the design looks like a butterfly.  I still need to practice on the circles, but I'm getting better.

I'll return this quilt to my friend next week.  I'm pretty sure she'll be happy with it.

Scrap Saturday RSC21 Yellow February

I finished my yellow table scraps challenge.  You can read all about it on yesterday's post here.

I got out my Sand Castles quilt top (pattern by Bonnie Hunter).  This was one of my RSC projects.

I made a big yellow back for it out of the large yellow less-desirable yellow fabrics that I inherited one way or another.  This helped make some room in the yellow bin!  Yeehaw.  The fabric on the right side is called Grandma's Napkins.  It's salvage says 1994.  Well, it's time.  Today is it's day to be used!

My momentum didn't stop there.  Next I put my Soul Searching swap quilt top on the floor.

A big back for Soul Searching was made with gingham and stripes.  It's bright and sunny.  I can't wait to show it off quilted in bright yellow thread and a fun quilting design.

And then after that I just kept going like the little engine that could.  I made a back for the churn dash blocks that I put together using yellow scraps of sashing.  Low and behold I can now get the lid on the yellow bin of scraps!  Here's the churn dash quilt top.  It's so nice to see these blocks in a quilt top vs. sitting sad and lonely in a shoe box waiting their turn to shine.

And here's the back... with my assistant ready to help with assignments.

I'm usually a neutral type of quilter.  This week I'm coloring out of the box and using my bright YELLOW to longarm.  A lady from church gave me a whole box of bright color thread cones.  I still can't think of why she wanted to get rid of them.  They are great for me!

I also put ANOTHER quilt top together this week.  These are blocks from the Block Swap Adventure a few years ago.  I only requested that blocks be 12.5" (12" finished) size and that they contain orange, yellow, or yellow and orange.  That's it--there were no other instructions.  These are the blocks that were sent to me.  I found a citrus fabric in my orange scrap bin that was enough for the sashing and border.  I remember getting that piece as a "prize" in the remnant bin.

I found a gently used fitted sheet in my stockpile of stuff that has yellow and orange and other stripes.  It will be the one-fabric back for the orange/yellow quilt below.

I feel really productive moving these quilts to the next stage this week.  Woohoo!

Yep, I started another project!  I'm not surprised.  I did have a Thanksgiving quilt and a Christmas tree skirt on my wish list of finishes for 2021.  Every year when we put up the Christmas tree my husband and I can't believe that I haven't made a tree skirt.  Well, THIS is the year.

These four blocks took hours!  But the time spent was totally worth it.

The Santas above are for a tree skirt pattern called Santa Claus Tree Skirt.  The pattern can be found in the book called More Quick Rotary Cutter Quilts by Pam Bono Designs.  I really bet you are wondering why I decided to put yellow flowered coats on my Santas?  This fabrics is VERY sentimental.  It was a WIP of a house dress that my grandma was making.  She passed away in 1975.  I hung on to it all this time and wanted a place special for it.  The house dress was all cut out and partially started.  I cut around the darts and cut out the zipper.  Only the first few instructions were completed.  I found this in my yellow scraps bin and thought that this would be the perfect place for it.  I adored my grandma.  I still remember the day that I watched her sew Lambsy, my stuffed animal, and put the beans back in it.  She was an amazing quilter and seamstress and crafter.  I will think of her every holiday season with this quilt around our tree.  The alternate blocks for this pattern are trees with HSTs.  I think the yellow calico really jazzes it up.  It's Christmas... it will be under the tree...  I don't think the Santas will be hard to recognize in this quilt even with the yellow flowery print coats.  I LOVE it already!

Table Scraps Challenge RSC21 -- Yellow -- A Friday Finish

I had several cut yellow table scraps left over this month.  I made this cute shelf topper.  Here it is on my kitchen table for a photo.

Don't worry about how it fits the table.  I didn't make it for this table.

I practiced this quilting design on it and put them down the center of the shelf topper.  I filled in everything else with an all-over stipple.  I changed thread for the blue border and continued the stipple.

I backed it with this fabric from the multi-colored bin.  I had just enough of it for this and then a few scraps were left.  It worked out perfectly even though it doesn't match the yellow at all.

Here's where the shelf topper landed.  It fits this bookcase top nicely and seems to brighten it up a bit.

I'm linking up on Joy's blog, The Joyful Quilter, for the table scraps linky party.  Come join the fun!

I may pick some of Grandma's buttons for the eyes.  The pattern suggests buttons.

WIP Wednesday 2.24.21

It's been a wonderfully productive week in the quilting sense!  Here's what happened this week:

I finished the Fortune Teller quilt (pattern by Amanda Jean Newburg).

I made some veggies for the Veggie Patch quilt at Katie Mae Quilts.

I finished the row of four sets of quotes for the Full Stop quilt with RSC21 group.

I used large pieces of undesirable yellow fabrics from my yellow scrap bin to make quilt backs for The Churn Dash Quilt, Sand Castles, and Soul Searching.  That's three quilts getting close to a finish!  I can finally put a lid on the yellow scrap bin.

Now this quilt below is just a hot mess!  I'm not sure if I like anything about it except that I'm done making the top.  These blocks started out to be my Temperature QA.  Each fabric represented the high or low for the day.  Yuck.  I can tell why I quit working on it.  I also didn't like the way that the ends of the rows were going.  I ripped it apart and put it in a 9x9 layout.  I'm not sure if it will be a cute crib quilt, but it will be a quilt.

I may experiment with these templates that I got on Wish.  Have you ever shopped on Wish?  Oh dear.  It's like a gamble every time I order something.  I think these templates will be actually one of the good things I got on Wish.  It looks to me like things are printed backwards on them.  That may have been why they are so cheap.  I don't think that really matters to me.

Looks like my camera was hacked in to while I ran in to Sam's Club to get lunch stuff in bulk for my husband.  Little squirt...

This is the pile of left over undesirable yellows that I made quilt backs out of.  I had to rip the edges of the big pieces to make a straight edge.  I will run them through my Accuquilt strip dies and make 2.5" and 1.5" strips quickly.

This brings me down to 58 projects on my WIP list.  This is getting exciting for me.

The Citrus Quilt

After the excitement of starting to quilt the Churn Dash Quilt that I posted about yesterday, I decided to just keep sewing!  Here's the next group of quilt blocks that I had sitting in a box for a few years from the Block Swap Adventure all in a top!

On my WIP Wednesday list I think I call this the orange and yellow blocks from the Block Swap Adventure.  This is definitely a happy little quilt to brighten a winter day.  As with many swaps, I think the reason that I put off putting this quilt together for so long was that I didn't feel that there were enough blocks for a quilt (I have three left over that may land on the back.)  Also, some of the blocks were not the right size.  A little strip here and there fixed that problem.  Some of them even look as though they are on purpose!

I'm almost positive that this quilt will be quilted with yellow thread as well since I liked it so much on the Churn Dash quilt.

Next to decide on what to do to make a back.

The Churn Dash Quilt

This week I was playing with yellow scraps for the RSC21.  I used yellow scraps as the sashing and border of these churn dash blocks that have been sitting in a box for a few years from the Block Swap adventure.  I got excited about it and just kept sewing.

I grabbed undesirable yellow scraps out of the yellow bin and the one remaining churn dash and whipped together a suitable back for it.  Here's my assistant awaiting assignments in the quilt room.

The photo below turned out a little yellow due to lighting.

I'm quilting it using my template from Urban Elements called Dew Drops in the Garden.  I think it really looks cute.  The design has the right mix of circles, swirls, and leaves.  Sometimes the combo looks like a butterfly.

I don't usually quilt with colored thread.  It's usually white, beige, or off white of I'm feeling bold.  LOL.  Today it's all YELLOW.  I love the effect!  I see more yellow thread quilting in my future.

RSC21 -- More Yellow Scraps Used

Yesterday I finished my Fortune Teller quilt.  You can read all about it here, but here's a photo.

I finished the quote row for the Full Stop quilt.  You can see my bin of yellow scraps is still hiding behind the chair in the living room.  It looks like I should pull some big chunks out of there and make a few yellow backs for WIPS that are waiting.

Last year I made a few veggies for the Veggie Patch quilt.  You can find details for this pattern at Katie Mae Quilts.  I made the yellow veggies this week:  a squash, a yellow pepper, and two ears of corn.  Here they are with their garden friends, peas and carrots made in 2020.

I'm quite excited about this next little quilt.  These are churn dash blocks received way back in 2013 as part of a swap called the Block Swap Adventure.  It was probably the second swap I ever participated in.  This adventure really helped me learn different skills when I was still a new quilter.  Each month, Linda from Stray Stiches would match quilty bloggers up for a swap.  You would pick the block you want made.  The partner picked the block he/she wanted made.  You swapped.  It was fun for a while.

I decided to use yellow 2.5" scraps and some pink corner stones to set these churn dash blocks into a baby quilt.  I also used a little scrap to make the border.  I think it turned out bright and happy.  Yesterday these blocks were still sitting in a shoe box.  Today they are a finished flimsy!  Thanks, yellow scrap bin!

I even pulled out several "undesireable" yellows to make a quilt back.  I think I may practice a pantograph on this little quilt.  I haven't done a panto for quite a while.  Looks like a great place for it.  I can't believe we only have one more Saturday of yellow.  This month is flying!

Fortune Teller Quilt Complete

The Fortune Teller quilt is complete.  It looks so bright in the snow.  I really love seeing some of my RSC projects become finishes!

I quilted it with my Circle Lord giant template board called Swirls.  It measures 54" x 68".  This will be a graduation gift for my friend's daughter.  I know she will like the bright colors.

I backed it with a soft, repurposed flannel sheet.  It was just the right size.  Brrr.  It's 20 degrees outside.  We have about 6" to 8" of snow depending on where you stand and where it blew.  Then it rained.  Everything outside is sealed with a glaze.  When I take five steps three of them are on top of the snow and then my boots sink down and break through the glaze.  I am thankful to have a warm house and electricity.  I am thankful that the fuel oil guy was able to make it up the driveway and deliver fuel to heat the house before that last dump of snow arrived.  I am thankful.

The pattern for this quilt can be found in the book Sunday Morning Quilts.   It is written by Amanda Jean Nyberg and Cheryl Arkison.  I was lucky that I could get a copy from my local library.  I started this project by making a couple of fortune teller blocks in the color of the month as a RSC (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) project back in 2014.

Mushrooms and Peas Veggie Patch Blocks

I was going through my WIPS and decided what yellow scrap blocks I needed to make next.  Looks like it's time to make all of the yellow veggie blocks for the Veggie Patch quilt at Katie Mae Quilts.

Yesterday I made a pea block and two mushrooms.  I realized that I still had a bunch of green scraps on my desk and it was easy to put these blocks together with some Accuquilt shapes I already had on hand.

In yellow I'll need to make two ears of corn, squash, and a yellow pepper.  Tune in on Saturday for the RSC21 post.  Hopefully I'll have those done.
