Tiana the Brood Hen?

For three days now this chicken, Tiana, has been sitting on her eggs.  I carefully moved her to the brooding side of the chicken coop on 7/7/14 (sounds lucky, huh?).  At that time I moved her with four eggs.  On 7/9/14 I gave her four more eggs since she seemed to be sitting on the nest most of the time.  She's not getting up for much.  She didn't even eat the treats (bread pieces) that I gave her for a couple of days.  I've been watching and waiting and wanting a brood hen.  Could this be the one?  I guess we'll see in about 21 or so days.

I tried to select the average sized eggs and the less pointy ones.  Most of the brown ones are less pointy.  A friend told me that the "rounder" eggs are female.  We'll see what happens.

Here she is stretching her legs to get a drink.  You can also see where the other chickens can see her in the background (behind the screen.)  You can also see all her feed in the trough.  She's barely touching it.  She didn't eat all of her bread or kale either.  Come on, Tiana.  You can do it!

WIP Wednesday 7.9.14

For good ole summer time, I am managing to get a lot done in the quilting world.  Here's what happened this week:

I played with some red scraps (and white and blue scraps) and made this mini quilt.  Move it to the "to be quilted" pile!

...and because I started this Born on the 4th flag wall hanging, I linked it up to Cat Patches NEW FO Linkup.  I won this cute pin!

2014 NewFO Challenge

I started and finished quilting an OSU baby quilt for my niece.  Stay tuned for a Friday Finish!

I had a double Friday finish and finished the Thomas the Train panels #4 & #5.  This should be all for these panel quilts for a while unless someone at the guild finds more.

I got this pattern from Marcus Fabrics.  Super fast and fun!  What a great way to use some of Grandma's buttons.  I need to find an old picture frame.

Ohio State Baby Quilt

I was inspired by the Little Boy Lucas quilt by Sarah Price.  I saw it on the Jolly Jabber.  I made this quilt in Ohio State (OSU) colors for my niece that is due with her first child in August.  This little quilt went together really fast.  I started it on Friday afternoon and finished quilting it Sunday night.  Trim and bind and it's a gift!  Here it is on the frame.  Hopefully I'll have a finished quilt to show you later this week.

Of course I'm quilting it with Circle Lord Swirls.  It's my go to design for points and squares.

Keeping the Chickens Straight

I feel I have reason to keep my chickens "sorted" so that I can remember who is who when they are all full grown.  I have been shopping online for leg markers.  Duh?  Why didn't I think of colored zip ties?  My husband buys them by the 100 pack and they are perfect.  For my records ('cause I forget stuff like this), here's how they are marked:

Yellow = the four chicks I raised as babies
Blue = two chicks from my friend that moved that are about a month older than my chicks
Pink = tried as a brood hen and didn't work
None = Original chickens from my friend

See the green dots on the chicken in the pic above?  Yep, BINGO dabber.  I needed a quick way to mark a chicken when she is sitting on the nest before I shoo her out to move her nesting box and make her a brood chicken.  Funny, huh?  Then I try her as a brood hen.  If it doesn't work out I give her a pink band and wait until I think another one is brooding.

Above is "brownie".  This is one of my original babies.  Awwwww.  They are quite friendly.  I'm kinda bummed that the others are still picking on them and they get the last of the scraps.  That's pecking order...

Scrap Saturday - Red

I started working on this project last week.  I was guessing that the color for July was going to be red, white, and blue.  It's really red.  But here's the project that I did.  I LOVE it!  I didn't get it completely done for the 4th of July, but I'm happy with the progress I made.

This quilt is Born on the 4th.  It was in McCall's Quilting, May/June 2014.

I'm linking up with Angela at SoScrapy: ScrapHappy blog.
