July -- 2014 New FO Challange @ Cat Patches

2014 NewFO Challenge

Each month Barbara at Cat Patches hosts a New FO Challenge Linky Party.  I'm joining in this month since I have a specific new project. You can link up here.   I loved the pattern, Born on the 4th, from McCall's Quilting , May/June 2014.  I have plenty of red/white/blue scraps.  Here's my star for the project that I just started:

My little star points don't match up nicely in the corners.  I need to fix that!

I'm wondering if Angela at SoScrappy  is going to do red/white/blue for this month.  She changed her background color on the blog to white.  She's showing some white background blocks.  I wonder if that's what it is.  I guess I'll wait and see.  But for now I'll be working on this mini.  The 4th is only a few days away!  Happy Independence Day!

My son and I are headed to the roller coaster capitol of the world -- Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.  He's 7 years old.  He has no fear.  I can't wait to get a few pics of us there.  We may just go to their Camp Snoopy (for kids his size) or Soak City (the waterpark).  It is HOT (80's) and muggy today.  But we are going to have a blast.  No more sewing for me today!

Quilt Made by a 10-Year Old

Yesterday I finished longarming this quilt that was made by a 10-year old girl.  She is learning to quilt in the kids' program with our local quilt guild.  I will be giving this quilt to her today.  I can't wait to see the look on her face.  I will also be giving her 7-year old sister the quilt that she made.

I quilted it with Circle Lord Swirls.  Sorry I couldn't show the whole quilt.  I was pressed for time.  I didn't want to risk getting grass all over it.

I love that bright inner border.  It really makes things pop and helps coordinate the back.

Here's the pieced back.

This one was made by her 7-year old sister.

Scrap Saturday -- Last Yellow

This week I worked on a few flying geese blocks for my scrappy Wanderlust blocks (by Bonnie Hunter).  The pattern can be found in Quiltmaker Magazine July/August '14 No. 158.  Here are my yellow center stars:

Below is what two Wanderlust blocks look like.

Nested Churndash QA Friday Finish

I'm excited that my little Nested Churndash QA quilt is finished.  I started it this week and finished it this week.  It measures a nice 24" square.  Perfect for a little table topper.

I quilted it with the Circle Lord Cosmos pattern.

Check out the other quilts in the Flickr Group!

I'm happy to link up today's finish with Richard and Tanya Quilts for the Link-A-Finish FRIDAY.

A 7-year old made this!

I finished longarm quilting this rail fence quilt.  It was made by a 7-year old!  She is part of the Teach a Kid How to Sew program in our local quilt guild.   I know she is going to love the quilting.  I boldy quilted it in bright blue Cosmos.  This is a Circle Lord quilting pattern.  It came out great!  I will give this back to her tomorrow.  She will then learn how to trim it, make the binding, and bind it.  Awesome, huh?

WIP Wednesday 6.25.14

I took in two more quilts to longarm for two special customers.  Our quilt guild helps girls learn how to sew (and quilt!)  Two sisters finished their rail fence pattern quilts.  The quilt on my frame was made by a 7-year-old girl!  I also have her sister's quilt to longarm.  Hopefully I'll show both of them complete by this time next week.  I'm doing some floral quilting on this one.  The quilt spoke to me with it's flowers.  It's taking me about 45 minutes per pass.  Hope I get it done in time for her Saturday.   Update, 5:30am:  It's done!!!  I couldn't sleep this morning and finished it.  Whohoo!  I'll post a full pic if/when the sun comes out!!!

I'm quilting cosmos on it using bright blue thread.  It looks awesome on the dark brown.  Here's a pic of the pattern, but the color doesn't look exact in the photo.  I know I could have picked a simpler, quicker pattern, but I wanted this 7-year old to have something special.  It's awesome when the quilt speaks to you on how to quilt it.

I made a one-block Nested Churn Dash QA block.  (See link on right sidebar for QA blog hop.)  I made the block and longarmed it yesterday before I put the time-consuming quilt (picture above) on the frame.  I will have it done by Friday for a Friday Finish!

I finished quilting one of the Thomas the Train panels for our LQG.

I finished the yellow kite girl block for the RSC14.  Here's a pic of all six this year:

I finished longarming my Dutchman's Puzzle quilt.  It has moved to the "to make binding" pile.

I finished the block for June for the Classic Meets Modern BOM (Log Cabin)

I finished block 7 for the Spring Sampler at Cora's Quilts.  (Two more blocks to go!)

Nested Churn Dash QA

I've decided to make a small table topper (one block) of the Nested Churn Dash.  Warning... this block is quite addicting.  It's very fun.  Since I've made one, I will keep this one on the list for future quilts.  Check out Sherri's blog, A Quilting Life for the blog hop details.  You can check out the Want It, Need It, Quilt flickr group.

Here's my block:

Believe it or not, I have already quilted it!!!  I knew my longarm would be tied up for a while, so I threw it on and off.  I love how the quilting came out.  Sorry to be such a tease, but you'll have to wait for the reveal on a Friday Finish.  I just need to get the binding done.  Fun project, fun, fun!

Classic Meets Modern QAL -- June Block

Here's my block for June for the Classic Meets Modern QAL.  It's my version of a modern log cabin block.  I'm just having a little trouble letting go and doing things wonky.  So here it is:

Another Thomas Friday Finish

Here we go...  Finally a simple Thomas the Train panel finish.  This is the 3rd one I have finished for our LQG.  Two more to go.  This one is backed with sailboats.  I did a Leah Day Railroad Tracks design for the freehand longarm quilting.  I like the way the binding looks on the front of this one.

I'm happy to link up today's finish with Richard and Tanya Quilts for the Link-A-Finish FRIDAY.

WIP Wednesday 6.18.14 & FNSI Plans

Summer fun is in full force.  Not a lot of quilting is getting done, but a lot of fun is happening with me and our 7-year-old son.   Waterparks, swimming and fun.  I soon hope to comment on a trip to Cedar Point, roller coaster heaven in Sandusky, Ohio.

I hope to sew a few more yellow scraps to make a yellow Kite Girl block for June.  I plan to do this on Friday night for the June FNSI.  This is at Sugarlane Quilts.

Grab the Friday Night Sew In (FNSI) button

Here are my Kite Girl blocks thus far:

We've been working hard in the garden.  For the most part the plants that are supposed to be planted now are in and growing.  Our warm (79 degrees or so), humid weather is really making it nice for all the new plants.

Here you can see my chicken helper feeding the chickens next to the garden inside the garden.  Chickens are new to us this year.  WE LOVE THEM!!!  Lookout egg recipes!

I finished the June blocks for the Love Laugh Quilt Christmas Improv QA.

I made 64 little yellow 4-patches for the RSC14.

Even though I'm on a fabric diet this year, I couldn't pass up all these garage sale goodies for $50.  Look at all those reds, blues, and YUMMY neutrals!!!
