TWO New Crib Quilts

With the 13 finishes I had the first quarter, it's time to start a couple of new projects that have been on my list in my brain.  The quilt pattern is called Dinner Party.  You can see it here  at the Fat Quarter Shop.

This will definitely be a non-directional quilt.  I thought I had all the horses going the way I wanted until I realized that I did not have the blocks turned correctly on one of the prints which will be four of the twelve blocks.  I had enough of the purple paisley in my scraps to use as the background fabric.  I think it's perfect for it.  Thank you, Linda, for the beautiful, quality scraps.  They are so much fun to fluff through.

Linda also sent me her bonus triangles and little scraps.  There will be another quilt of some sort made with these fabrics.  I had to wait to find this pattern so that I could showcase the bigger prints.

In July of 2022, Linda--who blogs at Art in Search asked me if I wanted the scraps left over from her Purple, Black & Horses quilt.  During the last three years I have been patiently waiting for the right pattern to come along to show off some of the horse prints she sent to me.  Finally!

This week I used a school themed novelty print for the back of a red/white/blue quilt with a house in the center.  You can see it on my blog post here.  I had the school themed print for a while.  Someone gave it to me.  I really couldn't find a good place to use it and figured it would land on the back of a quilt that I would give to someone at school.  After I trimmed the quilt I thought WOW! this might be the right print to use on the Dinner Party pattern.

You can see a pic of the quilt pattern with these fabrics in the pic.  I'm not sure what background it will have yet.  I might try to mix it up a bit, but I'm not sure how I'll do it just yet.  This novelty print came from VIP Fabrics.  Remember that chain in the late 80's or early 90's?

So there you have it, two new projects to go on the 2nd Quarter UFO list when I make it.

D9P (Disappearing 9-Patch) Crib Quilt Is Quilted

Spring break week had another productive day.  I quilted the D9P crib quilt.  It measures 40" square.  Red, polka dot binding is already made.  Let's bind!

Quilt holder/helper came into the room right when I was done trimming.  It was a great opportunity to put him to work.  He also swept all of the loose strings under the longarm.  Woohoo!

 

Quilted! -- Upside Down!

I wanted to make use of my spring break time.  I quickly loaded this little red orphan block quilt onto the longarm frame yesterday.  I didn't pay attention to how the Baptist fans were going to land on the house...  So I guess I quilted it upside down.  I doubt if the baby that receives it will notice.

It's something I can live with, so I didn't rip it out.  My husband said it looks like it's windy at the house.  I don't remember what the block is called in the corners.  In this instance they look like boats on a sea of red.  I can't remember what project they were a leftover from.  It may have been a Pat Sloan block of the month piece that I didn't use?  Regardless, I still think it turned out cute.

The red dot binding left over from another project is ready to go.  I'll get it put on this week so that it can land in my school bag for when I got back to school on Tuesday, 4/7.

This quilt measures 43.5" square.

Bindings -- Slow Sunday Stitching

 I'm still working on multiple projects that are in the binding stage.  Tall Fly was in my sew-to-go bag:

Grandma's Embroidery quilt sits on my chair waiting for me to watch Survivor or a movie.

Zip It hangs out in the back seat of my truck for when I'm just waiting somewhere.  

In theory, three quilts are closer to the finish!

RSC26 -- A Finish with RED

Tall Fly was finished during my planning period at school yesterday.  I won a set of these blocks in the Block Lotto several years ago.  

It measures 42.5" x 46".  I used a gingham fabric for the binding.  I really like the stripe effect that it appears.  I have tons of gingham in my scraps.  I see more gingham bindings in my future.  I longarm quilted it using the Circle Lord Baptist Fan Giant Template board.

I was also busy this week rounding up other red blocks that needed to be put to good use.  I made these two flimsies:

I'm not quite sure how to arrange these six basket blocks yet.  They are an odd size. I don't wish to make more of them to make a bigger quilt because I made these in 2011 or so.  I didn't not have the grasp of the importance of the 1/4" seam allowance back then.  But I would like to use them.  I'm thinking I will arrange them so that the sashing will be 3.5" and make stars for the cornerstones.  You can see the blocks need trimmed.  Stay tuned.

Another Red Block Quilt Enters the Scene

I really liked the Disappearing 9-Patch blocks that I found in my red block collection that were made into a flimsy earlier this week.  I used some of the same fabrics and created this quilt with more red blocks that I had in the stack:

I didn't measure it, but I believe the blocks were 9" finished.  So this is probably a little less than 45" square.  Hopefully I'll get this little diddy and the D9P counterpart quilted over spring break (next week).  Then I'll be able to take them with me to my end-of-the-year long-term sub job that will last from 4/6 until 5/30.  I'm covering for a maternity leave of a 4th grade math teacher.  These will be nice to work on during my lunch and planning periods--hopefully.

Red is the RSC26 (Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2026) color of the month.  I decided to just work on the red blocks that I had that could be made into baby quilts and work with them to get some finishes.  I have some red basket blocks that need to be made into something.  Stay tuned...

Tall Fly Binding

I put the binding on this Tall Fly crib quilt.  I had 4.5" remaining.  Whew.  I posted about cutting the binding with my Accuquilt strip cutter here.  It was an odd-sized scrap.  I love it when that happens.

Yes, this quilt will be in my sew-to-go bag today and tomorrow.  Our schools around here have spring break starting on FRIDAY.  We get a full week off this year.

Another Little Finish

 I finished all the hand stitching on this little piece.  It measures 15" square.

The story behind this little piece is that it is something that my friend, Betty, would work on while she and her husband would travel in their RV.  Betty's husband got sick and passed away.  Betty couldn't bear the memory of working on it and she gave them to me.  Then Betty had a stroke and passed away herself.  It is a two-piece set.  These are in the memory of Betty.

It was nice to have something so small to take with me in my sew-to-go bag--even if I've been working on it for about a month.

Red Disappearring 9-Patch Blocks

I had some red diasppearing 9-patch blocks in a bin.  I found them when I was looking for my red basket blocks.  I decided to put them in an arrangement and make a baby quilt.  Tada...

I did find the basket blocks and a five other red blocks that will look nice together.  Red is the RSC26 (Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2026) color of the month.  I decided to just work on the red blocks that I had that could be made into baby quilts and work with them to get some finishes.  Stay tuned...

Tall Fly on the Longarm Frame

Last week I loaded Tall Fly crib quilt onto the longarm frame.  I could not get started with the quilting at that time.  We were without power due to storms for over 24 hours.  No Wifi for THREE days!!!  Hence the lack of blog posts.

This weekend I was finally able to quilt it.  Hopefully I will get the binding on it this week.

I decided to quilt it with the Circle Lord Baptist Fan giant template board.  The next quilt planned for the longarm will use this board as well.  Time saving...

It was a beautiful 73 degrees yesterday.  Chickens took a dust bath; ducks waddled in the grass.  It's time to start cleaning out those flowerbeds and get ready for spring flowers!!!

The pink crate protects the tiny catnip plant that I transplanted.  Otherwise the chickens would rip it out and roll in it.  They love the loose dirt around their coop.  This area is where the hydrangea was.  It got too big to stay there.  It was flowing onto the neighbor's hay field.  He mows within two feet of the coop.

The snow drops seemed to get a late start this year.

Binding Time

 I sewed the binding onto this little hand stitching piece so that it was ready for my sew-to-go bag today.  Happy stitches!

Last Sunday it was 72 degrees.  I took our son to a local dam to magnet fish.  I was able to work on binding my Zip It quilt as I watched him at the dock. (He's the little orange speck on the dock.)

We were there at just the right time.  We got to see the docks being moved into place for the season.  Here's a pic of the floating mini crane moving it towards us.

Sunscreen was needed... just in case.

The Monday came...  Ground covered in snow!

Kawandi -- The Finish

 This week my first ever Kawandi project was finished.  It measures 16.5" x 20".

I like the colors.  It will be on our kitchen table for the month of March.  I love how the stitches look so organic and crooked.  I'm happy that I basted the pieces on as I went so that I could put it in my bag to take with me.  I didn't have to worry about losing pins in the bag.  It was so relaxing to stitch on this project using leftover pieces of embroidery floss (2 strands).  I changed the direction of my stitches as I saw fit.  The floss glided nicely through the good cotton and the Warm & Natural batting.

I'm happy that another finish gets crossed off the list.  Daylight savings time is coming this weekend... I'm starting to see less sewing time but more outside-in-the-flowerbed time coming.

Binding in Que

 I'm still slow stitching the binding on the Rosebud embroidery quilt that my grandma stitched a little over 50 years ago.  I'm about half way around it.  Yes, I did say SLOWLY stiching...

I did put a binding around the Zip It quilt this week.  It will be next in que to have the binding slowly stitched.  It is nice to sit under a quilt and watch tv in the evenings when there is snow on the ground (or basically any time of year is good for binding stitching.)
