Cabins by the Lake -- Flimsy Complete

 This week I finished the last block for Cabins by the Lake.

Here's the complete quilt top:

The flannels used were from a layer cake I won years ago.  It's been so long I can't remember the giveaway or the fabric line to give them credit.  :(. Sorry.

Cabins by the Lake is a pattern from Fons & Porter Magazine.  It is even a cover quilt.

Another bin (Ziplock bag) empty, another magazine to file... Ahhhh, progress.  Up next to find some nice fabrics and make a back for this one.  I'm happy to put another quilt in the to-be-quilted due for 2022.  I see some more finishes in sight.  I am so happy that I made the commitment to make one block a week for this quilt when I found it just sitting in a bin in the Ziplock bag.  I already have a fun idea for the leftover flannel scraps.  Stay tuned.

Scrap Happy Saturday

Merry Christmas!  I'm not sure if there will be a link-up at Angela's today or not, but I am posting my RSC progress.

I finished an RSC project from 2014 this week.  You can read more about it here.

I made six more box kite blocks.  (This was an RSC project from 2017.)  I put them together in a 7 x 10 layout instead of the original pattern that Bonnie Hunter designed.  This isn't my favorite block, but it does make a cute scrappy quilt.  The flimsy quilt size just didn't work for me.  I took out the center seam and now I have two cute crib quilts to finish!  It adds another project to my WIP list, but it's worth it.

More leader/enders have been made.  Here's 30 more 3.5" rail fence blocks.  328 of 900 complete.  Here they are sitting in front of the sewing machine I am using while mine is out for repair.  I never used this machine until this week.  Thanks to my Bonnie Hunter class, getting that 1/4" seam was easy and now I can piece and piece and piece...

Box Kite Flimsy

It adds another WIP to my list, but I think it's totally worth it.  Box Kite is a pattern by Bonnie Hunter.  Her pattern has a fancy border.  I left that part out.  The lessons I learned in her class were so worth it!  I started this project in March of 2017 and continued making blocks in the color of the month for the RSC.  The project became stale because of other projects.  Now I have an empty bin that is ready to be filled with a new RSC22 project!

My Box Kite quilt started out like this. It just didn't seem like a useable size.  I took out the center seam and now I have two little quilts that would be perfect for baby.

Final Box Kite Blocks

 Boy, I haven't worked on these blocks for a long time.  I had to look them up on my blog to remember how to put them together.  Here's the last six blocks for a 7 x 10 layout.  Yes, it's going to be a weird size.

Box Kite is a Bonnie Hunter pattern.  I was lucky enough to take one of her classes back in March of 2017.  I am not making the full quilt.  It was not one of my favorites of her pattern, but it was what she taught at the class that I took.  It was well worth the experience.  I use what I learned in the class that day for most of my piecing and cutting now.

I put these together with the Kenmore machine that my SIL gave to me years ago.  I figured out the 1/4" seam with the help of my Sewing Machine Seam Guide that I learned how to use at Bonnie's seminar.  I haven't heard any news on my old, faithful machine that is in the shop.  Still fingers crossed...  I am so thankful for YouTube videos to learn different things.  I was pretty sure how to wind the bobbin and thread the machine.  I invested a little over 10 minutes of video watching to make sure I was doing it correctly.  I'm happy to have spare needles for this machine because the universal needles that I have fit it.  I'll have to check some of my other machines to see if I have any other bobbins.  I only have one right now.  I will definitely make do with that.  I do know that the wrong height bobbin will cause TONS of problems.  I'll make sure I use the micrometer on those to make sure they are the same.  (Luckily I worked in a machine shop right after high school while going to college.  Those skills come in handy every once in a while.)

Here's my current set-up.  Oh, no I'm not using those kindergarten scissors for this.  I was cutting paper for  something else...  They just ended up there...

I'm not sure if I'll get these all together.  It's cookie baking day today AND dessert making for Christmas.  The excitement is building here.  Our son is soooooo excited.  He knows that Santa and our elves are not real and he knows the real reason for the season (now).  He still makes moments magical.  

I kept sewing.  Here's all 70 blocks on the bed.  Woohoo another quilt getting closer to a flimsy AND an empty bin sits on my desk!  I am going to allow myself to start one of my RSC planned projects in 2022.

Time to web these babies...  Oh, and there are four blocks that I made that aren't right...  They look like rectangles with a square in the middle.  There are three yellow and one blue.  I decided to keep them in the quilt to give it more interest.

WIP Wednesday 12.22.21

 I had a finish this week!  I finished my Slabs with White Rectangle crib quilt.  It's from 2014 RSC!  You can read more about it here.

Another cabin was completed on Sunday for my Cabins by the Lake Quilt.  One more cabin to go!  This is a Fons & Porter pattern.

More leaders and enders were added to the box.  298 of 900 are now complete.  These are 3.5" blocks.

I started a NEW mini project.  I don't expect this one to stay on my WIP list for too long.  This is Glad Tidings.  Pam Budah had a mini sew along.  You can read about it here.

The gifts are wrapped.  The menu is planned.  Owen is content and has just a few fun virtual meetings and a party.  I was sewing along, singing my song... then all of a sudden my sewing needle broke.  I think I hit a seam but nothing out of the usual.  I have replaced another needle and it broke too.  I really hope it is just out of time, but when I push the needle down button it makes a whirling noise and then nothing happens.  I hope I didn't break something off in the head.  The repair person where I bought the machine is  out until the first of the year.  I called my old repair guy.  He doesn't really repair digital machines, but he told me he'd look at it.  Fingers crossed...

Meanwhile, this is the first time I ever used this heavy duty machine.  My sister-in-law gave it to me several years ago.  It lives in the cabinet below where my regular machine sits on a piece of cardboard on top.  It seems to stitch just fine.  I need to figure out where to line up the foot to get that perfect 1/4" seam and I think I'll be able to piece a few more blocks.

RSC Crib Quilt Complete -- Slabs with White Rectangle

 This RSC project started in 2014 is now complete.  I'm not very creative on names.  I just call it Slabs with White Rectangle.  I went out in the frost this morning to get this colorful photo.

It's a little gloomy this morning...

I experimented with a non-quilts fabric for the border for this one.  The black border fabric is a stretchy jersey knit (I think).  I gave me zero problems at all!  This crib quilt measures 36" x 50".  It is super snuggly with fleece on the backing.  I used up two of the random striped binding that I had.  

I also experimented with a pantograph.  I'm not that good at following a pantograph (yet).  This was a great place to practice.  I started out following it.  I wasn't too thrilled when my lines of quilting overlapped.  I'm sure the snuggly baby that gets this quilt won't mind at all.  I kept going.  I tried another technique instead of the laser pointer and it got a little better.  I dropped my stylist down on the paper.  I couldn't find my pantograph cover (long, clear plastic piece that protects the pantograph and keeps in in place on my longarm table).  The stylist kept knocking the tape that held the panto in place and it would move now and then.  So about two-thirds of the way down the quilt I just decided to free-hand the rest of the quilting because I didn't want to rip the paper panto any further for now.  It looks like the raindrops started to flow and then morphed into swirls on the bottom.  I think it still looks fine for a charity quilt.  

I'm super happy it is finished.  This project was my OMG for December and it is done!  I am linking up to the finishing party at Elm Street Quilts here.

Cabins by the Lake Progress

Here's cabin #11!  Only one more cabin to go for this project.

One more house to go for this quilt... one more Sunday this year.  I'm so happy I set this goal when I found  the fabrics and pattern I eventually intended to use for this quilt in a Ziplock bag.
