Unity Quilt -- 2020 -- Bonnie Hunter Quilt Along is Finished

I finished the Unity Quilt!  This was a round robin style quilt led by Bonnie Hunter in 2020.  Some of the rounds I did my own thing.  This quilt sat idol for a while because I just couldn't decide what to do for the last round.  Here it is on our California king-sized bed:

When I saw it was big enough for our bed, I added a grey inner border and a small outer border.  It measures  79.5" x 87.5".  The pieced back consists of big chunks of neutrals.  I thought the front of this quilt had enough seams already.

Here's the clamshell quilting.  I used my Circle Lord giant template board for this.

Hand-Quilted Blue Orphan Block Table Topper is Complete

 I finished the binding on my Blue Orphan Block Table Topper.  This is my 13th UFO finish this quarter!

It measures 26.5" square.  I did some "e"s in the border and then experimented with filler lines.  I did not measure or mark the filler lines.  They are "organic'.  LOL

I finished it yesterday during my lunch break in pre-school.  You can see that I had one half of the binding to stitch.  I didn't expect to finish it yesterday, but here we are!

The other blocks in the set related to this one is still being hand quilted.  Only three of the blocks are stitched.  This will be a longer timer project.

Bright 9-Patch is a Finish

 I finished the Bright 9-Patch quilt this week.  It measures 37" square.

I stepped out of my comfort zone to put that green binding on it.  I like it.

I found a 60" wide piece that I thought worked cute on it.  I love a solid backing fabric.

Bright 9-Patch Binding -- Slow Sunday Stitching

This week I worked on sewing on the binding on my Bright 9-Patch crib quilt when on the go.  ...and yes, I'm waiting for bowling practice to be over to go home and have warm stew that has been in the crockpot!  It's that kind of weather.

One day last week it made it to kindergarten.  On the back wall under the eagle it says "Welcome Class of 2039".  Oh that's so weird to think.  Time flies.

Bright 9-patch also went with me to pre-school.  I have an hour at the end of the day in which the kids have gone home and I have to wait until it's time to leave.  Bummer I had to spend part of that hour looking for my thimble.  While I was frantically zipping coats because it's 25 degrees outside one of the kiddos took my shiny, gold thimble!  I had an idea who it was.  I searched her backpack and pockets.  When I talked to her I KNEW she had something to do with it.  She had been in a pickle most of the day.  She told me to look in the Legos...  Luckily I found it close to where I was sitting and it was not in the Lego bin.  Little stinker!  I did get a few more stitches in the binding after that.

At home I worked on the Rainbow Ribbons quilt in front of the tv in the evenings.

I finished the binding on Rainbow Ribbons.  Seriously, all this binding practice is really giving me a chance to get efficient at putting on binding.  I think I'm starting to prefer hand stitched binding instead of machine stitched binding.  Who would have thought they would ever hear me say that?

Oh this time of year gets exciting as I mark things off my list one by one!

Rainbow Ribbons is a Finish

 Rainbow Ribbons is finished.  It is being held by my lovely assistant.

I found the perfect backing fabric for this one.  The rainbow binding I made for my baskets quilt, but I didn't get the right feeling for it on that.  I think it works great for this one!  Here's the back:

I like the texture of the Circle Lord giant templant board called Wanders.  It quilts quickly too!

When I got up to look at my blog feed of the ones I read regularly, I looked at my quilt and realized that the top row is UPSIDE down!  Bummer.  Well, at this point I had already put a black border around the edge, made a back, AND loaded it onto the longarm frame.  Too late...  It's staying this way.  I'm sure it will still make a nice comfort quilt for someone.  Design choice.

This is a blast from the past.  This was a guild project.  We would make circles and applique them onto a square.  Then we could cut them into quarters and sew them back together.  I know this was abandoned because the pieces didn't match perfectly.  This was a group project that ended up in my take-home bin because I was ambitious back then.  LOL.  Now it waits to meet a back and be quilted.  I already have rainbow binding made that I didn't use on my baskets quilt.  Glad I found a place for that.

I'm super thrilled how many I finished this quarter.  I'm digging through some older ufo's that I I have worked on over 13 years ago.  Many will make great comfort quilts.  I've added some new projects too because sometimes I just can't resist a fun squirrel.  I recently found a box that I totally forgot about.  I'll be showing off those tops at the beginning of the year for the Winter goal.  Hope the weather/heat situation continues to hold out in the quilt room.  My husband has been working on some projects in that house and running the furnace there.  So far so good...

Productive Snow Day -- Unity Quilt

We had a snow day yesterday.  Woohoo!  Almost all the schools in our county were closed.  I finished the small borders, made the binding, made a back, and loaded the Unity quilt on the longarm frame.  The Unity quilt along was a round robin style quilt that Bonnie Hunter led during Covid shutdowns in 2020.

I substituted churn dashes for the block that Bonnie suggested. I did the churn dashes in the darker neutrals.  I think that is my favorite round.  I love the stars too.  There are so many fun memories in this quilt!  I see a bunny and gift.  I see presents and dots.  I see a fabric I won and a fabric I bought at a garage sale...  So many tales this quilt could tell.

I'm quilting it using my Circle Lord giant template board called Clam Shells.  I think the soft curves of the clam shells will do it justice and not take away from all the piecing.  I am using a neutral thread.

Our son walked up through the snow to visit.  He was very happy to not have school today like any kid would.  We both have been getting over a virus.  He got sick the Saturday before Thanksgiving.  I got sick the day after that.  My sister-in-law had it too and she wasn't around us before that.  This virus seems to linger on.  I finally started feeling better yesterday on day nine.  Finally...

I thought this was an interesting pic from the security camera of where my truck sits with the snow all around.  It's pretty here.  And yes, I did not get my little tomato bed cleaned out Thanksgiving weekend due to sickness.  It's not going anywhere.  It will be there the next sunny winter day.

Snow Day Sewing

 Snow day!  I think all the schools in our county are closed.  

I wasn't planning on making this until after January.  It's a quilt back for a quilt I hope to longarm over Christmas break.  I'm using panels!  You know, those things that were popular in 80's and late 90's?  I'm enjoying looking at the salvage edges with the dates and such.

These are really nice, quality cotton.  I don't see myself ever making a printed tree skirt.  I don't want this quality fabric to go to waste.  Maybe I will start a trend.  I did not purchase these.  ALL of them were given to me.  I have two boxes of them!  I predict they will become backs to baby quilts, comfort quilts, holiday quilts... The posibilties are endless.  This one is from the tree skirt.

This is from the Santa door hanger.  It's Ohio Amish country quality cotton.

Here's the view from my sewing machine window.  That's the buttoned up (but not too much for ventilation) chicken coop.  I'll get the four-wheeler out to drive up there to feed them today.  You can see the little cat tracks near the window.  The cats like to make eye contact with me from there.  Don't worry about them being cold, outside cats.  They have insulated cat houses out of the wind on the front porch with fresh straw in them.  They have a water bowl heater so that the outside water doesn't freeze.  They get fed twice a day.  They're living their best outdoor barn cat life.

Summit Stitches QA is a Finish

This little cutie was finished during my lunch as the gym teacher sub.  I think it looks great on the soccer net.  I finished it while being the substitute teacher for gym.

It measures 31.5" square.  It fits my kitchen table nicely.

I experimented with a dense free-hand longarm quilting design.  Some of the spots I really like, others need a little improvement.  It's still a fun finish.  I used up scraps 4-patches that I made as leader/enders that were just sitting in a box.  It has a frankenbatting and I was able to use up a bunch of small pieces of batting trimmings.  Woohoo!  Win, win!

This year I let my husband pick three colors and I added the neutral.  He picked black, grey, and forest green.  Can't wait to see how it all plays out.

I did learn a new skill -- spinning seams.  I have never tried spinning seams.  It worked out okay.  Yes, it's extra work.  But I think it will be worth it in the end.

Summit Stitches -- Slow Sunday Stitching

This week I took Summit Stitches QA to gym class.  It was a short week -- I only worked Monday and Tuesday due to the holiday break.  Here it is being stitched in the gym teacher's storage room office.  It won't be long until this one is finished.  One more side and one more corner to bind.

I finished the shirting blocks quilt that I was binding last week.  It's 37" square.

In front of the tv in the evenings I'm still working on the binding for Card Trick.  It's about 94" x 104". 

I also advanced to the next block of my largest hand quilting project -- Random Blue Blocks.  I'm still just marking off random places to stitch next to the pieces on this block.

RSC25 -- Pinks & Yellows

 I'm back to making 4-patch fun (Bonnie Hunter leader/ender blocks for 2025.) I made six during the month of November.  This makes 21 blocks in total since July.

I'll keep making these blocks until I think the quilt will be big enough.  36 blocks will be my minimum.  I have not set a maximum number of blocks yet.  I am using pink and yellow scraps with vintge sheets.

Shirting Blocks Quilt is a Finish -- Black Friday

I'm loving the old-fashioned vibe this quilt is giving me.  I started off with four shirting blocks that I was no longer interested in continuing.  I put some bubble gum pink fabric around them for sashing and borders.  I used a shirting stripe for the binding.  I LOVE it!

I backed it with an older floral in my stash.  I quilted it with rose colored thread using my Circle Lord giant template board called Wanders.  Franken batting is inside!  Win win!  I love it when I can use batting scraps.  It measures 37" square.  That's the perfect size for the charity called Jack's Basket.

It's Black Friday!!!  Are you excited?  Instead of standing in line for hours shopping for the next best thing, I will be SEWING and hopefully LONGARM QUILTING something.  Maybe I'll be in the longarm room organizing?  I'll be excited to see Bonnie Hunter's post about clue #2 to Lupine & Laughter.  Thanksgiving work is done!  Our interior decorator son is full of the holiday spirit.  He gets out all of the Christmas decorations that he's ever seen stored at our house and puts them EVERYWHERE -- anything that strikes his fancy...  Yes, it looks like Christmas puked all over the house... but he LOVES this time of year and loves doing it.  It doesn't cost us anything.  I'm not that picky how decorations get displayed.  It's so fun to see holiday spirit through his eyes.

Rainbow Ribbons is on the Frame

It's still warm enough to quilt in my longarm room.  Making hay while the sun shines on this Rainbow Ribbons quilt.

I'm quilting it using my Circle Lord giant template board called Wanders with bright yellow thread.  Can you see the striped backing?  I had just the right size of this material to back the whole quilt.  It's perfect for it.

Rainbow Ribbons is a Flimsy

Looking for the next thing on my list I could get together and get to the longarm, I threw this Rainbow Ribbons quilt together.  It is now a flimsy.  It's certainly bright.  If I can find enough black fabric, I may put 3.5" border around it to make it easier to quilt.

I also needed to get this off of the area it was sitting on my desk.  I need the extra room to start the 2025 Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt -- Lupine & Laughter.

This is a blast from the past.  This was a guild project.  We would make circles and applique them onto a square.  Then we could cut them into quarters and sew them back together.  I know this was abandoned because the pieces didn't match perfectly.  This was a group project that ended up in my take-home bin because I was ambitious back then.  LOL.  Now it waits to meet a back and be quilted.  I already have rainbow binding made that I didn't use on my baskets quilt.  Glad I found a place for that.

Summit Stitches QA on the Frame

 I'm experimenting with some free style quilting on this little quilt.  This is my Summit Stitches QA at Humble Quilts.

My loops/flowers/jesters... whatever they are are a varied in size.  I think it will work perfect for this little quilt.  It's dense, which is what I was going for.  I quilted it in a dark blue.  It will finish at 31.5" square.

Some fo my lines cross.  Some are crooked.  But I still like it.  I won't know what I can or can't do if I don't practice or try.  This quilt is made up of bits and pieces of things I just had sitting in bins.  Nothing spent except time -- relaxing time.  Even the batting was bits and pieces.  I picked pieces of batting that were the same thickness (but some were white and some were natural) and pieced them together.  Here's some of the left-over batting pieces.  My batting scraps are seriously getting under control!

Bright 9-Patch Binding in Progress

 I'm excited that this bright green binding is going on my Bright 9-patch quilt.  Although I'm working on the Bonnie Hunter mystery, I still need to keep up on things for my sew-to-go bag.  I love staying busy at school during my lunch and planning periods.

I stepped out of my comfort zone with the bright green, but then when I looked at it again, it brings out the green in the other prints and matches the back.  Green is my favorite color.  This will be fun to hand stitch the binding.  Don't mind that green and purple sticking out on the edges.  That's the left-over frankenbatting made from pieces of fleece.  This quilt is soft already.

More Binding Time & Hand Quilting

More progress was made on the hand quilting of this blue orphan block.  I'm practicing filler lines.

This week I worked on putting the binding on Card Trick.  It's a king-sized quilt. 

Darting Birds was finished this week.  I love the fabrics in this quilt.  It was a Kathleen Tracy QA in her facebook group.

Summit Stitches QA

 I finished assembling the quilt top for the Summit Stitches QA at Humble Quilts.

Hopefully I'll get it on the longarm this week so that it will end up in my sew-to-go bag.  We only have two days of school the week of 11/24.  It was fun to work with the blue 4-patches I made as leader/enders with no specific home when I made them.  4-patches always come in handy.

The little quilt I was working on with my dark fabrics was finished yesterday.  It is called Darting Birds.  It was a Kathleen Tracy QA on facebook.  I posted about it yesterday on my blog.
