Hogweed? -- or Not?

My neighbors were over checking out the earth work my husband has been doing in the driveway.  She texted me this photo and said, "My mom is showing off your new driveway..this is hogweed.  Wear heavy duty gloves and snap at base round up on ground.  Toss in garbage bags.  It gives nasty burns & blisters on humans and animals.

I believe I have snapped this off and thrown it to the chickens without being burned.  I'm not sure if this is hogweed or not.  I haven't seen any of it flower.  Any ideas?

Maisy the Broody Duck

This is Maisy. She is one of my original ducks from 9/14/15.. She is an Ancona duck and does not require a lot of swimming water.   She is broody this summer. 

I’m doing an experiment to see if she can hatch chicken eggs. Last week I gave her five marked eggs. (I marked them with a Sharpie so I could easily identify which eggs I gave her. Others will continue to lay eggs in her next and I’ll gather them when she goes out for water and gets up to stretch.)

 

She isn’t as gentle with the eggs as Blondie the brood hen. Three of them have broken already. 

More Garden Photos

It RAINED!!!!  We have fresh God-watered plants!  It's definitely the best kind of watered plants.  I planted a few more rows of seeds since I have everything freshly tilled right before the nice rain.

These pics are more for my reference (even though I'm super proud of my garden this year!)  There was an extra large package of spinach in my seed collection.  It took up this whole row behind the tomatoes and next to the watermelon plants.  I threw some dill seeds on the very end near the grass.  I don't really use dill much.  I may have to play with it if I have a bunch of cucumbers.

In the row between the acorn squash pool ladder and the watermelon I planted a mini seed packet of kale that I got on eBay because I couldn't get out and shop during the March Covid madness.  I also threw in some old seed packets of parsley and oregano.  I LOVE parsley, but don't do much with oregano.  I may have to figure it out with all these tomato plants looking so nice this year.  I may also have to dabble in drying some herbs.  That could be a fun adventure.

In this longer row out from the tomatoes (the cut up TV tower piece that has the hinge...) first I spilled a large package of dill seeds.  It was an accident that I thought was a divine intervention.  The packet got wet when it started to rain and I had it in my pocket.  Dill seeds spilled everywhere -- about 100 of them.  I covered them and thought I'd see what happens.  After that I planted about six packages of radishes.  We weren't huge fans of radishes until I started putting them in with my pot roasts instead of potatoes.  YUM!  It was a big hit with my husband and I.  I'm not sure if I can grow radishes in the hot month of July/August.  This is just another garden experiment since I have the nice, tilled area left over this year.  I love it when my husband keeps my Mantis and rototiller working!

A while back when I planted a bunch of perennials from my friend, Judy, she gave me a plant I had never heard of.  She said that her plant doesn't bloom every year, but this year it did.  It is called Bear's Breeches.  I planted mine in two different locations.  One is in the safety of the dog kennel inside the chicken yard (chicken quarantine area).  The other is in the chicken yard, but is covered by large pink milk crates so that the chickens don't eat it.  I will move it in the spring to safety.  I experimented with it to see if the chickens and ducks would nibble at the leaves.  They ate all my hosta and fern leaves.  I'm pretty sure they would eat this pretty plant.  I think it's really pretty.  I never heard of this perennial before now.  Here is a photo of it at my friend's house:

Moving It Forward Monday

I finished this quilt for a friend this weekend. 

I quilted this plain 4-patch quilt with my Circle Lord template board called Egyptian Eye. My friend was really happy when she saw it. It does bring the quilt to life with all that motion. 

I’m happy to cross another project off my list. 

Slow Sunday Stitching

I finally had time to do some stitching during an oil change. I was so happy to have my sew-to-go bag with me. 

I'm working on my Linen & Threads Mystery SAL.  I am still working on the clue from March when school closed.  It will be an easy project to take with me if/when school starts back up.

The oil change was so different...  There were folding tables between me and the counter guy so that we were 6 feet apart.  He sanitized my truck and put covers over the steering wheel and seat.  There was no free coffee or snacks.  The popcorn machine was gone.  I didn't have the courtesy driver take me three miles away and walk back (to get my steps in).   There were only six chairs in the waiting area.  I'm glad I got one with a desk to set my things.  The good part was that I wasn't there very long.  It took less than an hour this time.  He only tried to push two extra services on me...  That's a first!   At the end I asked him if I was supposed to throw my credit card to him so that he could catch it at the counter.  They weren't set up for Apple Pay yet.  I got out of there and went on my way.

Two Green Guild Quilts

I pulled these two green quilts out of the bin today.  I need to get them in line to be longarm quilted.  They also need backs made.  They have been on my WIP list for a few years now.

WIP Wednesday, 7.8.2020 -- on a Thursday...

I'm a little late on my WIP Wednesday post.  Internet problems and then I just ran out of time is the culprit.  But here we go with the list...

I’m still working at least 15 minutes a day on long arm quilting a 4-patch quilt for a friend. It’s awesome when I can take away the chair that holds the batting and keeps it off the unfinished floor.   I’m more than half way done. 

Nothing at all got done on my rug.  Guess I haven't touched my sewing machine in over a week...

My garden is looking fabulous. I finally got zucchini plants to grow. We finally got rain two days ago. These are the best looking eggplant plants I’ve ever grown. Now let’s see if they produce nice eggplants. 

The pepper plants don’t look that great, but this baby pepper looks promising. 

Blondie the brood hen is still sitting on the eggs that I gave her on July 4th. We are past the rough first days. The countdown is on for July 26th!

A guy I knew in high school was on the show “Naked & Afraid”. His name is Tim Phillips. Owen and I are big fans of survival shows. Tim made Owen a super happy super fan by sending him an autographed photo.
